Actually John had effectively left the band six months earlier, but just never formally announced it.

The author says he was disappointed in the United States because there were people who reacted, and showed it in the marketplace to John's claim the music group (he) was more popular than our Lord...

Well, his disappointment is sadly, and ignorantly misplaced.

I have never been a Beatles fan. I do like Paul and Wings. I was a Stones fan. Plus, I was too young to even care. I do like some of the Beatles music though. And I do not believe John was trying to be blasphemous. He was stating something that might have been true. But I also think that the drug culture they helped promote was a problem and that was another reason why people didn't like them.

What John said was true. The Beatles were more popular than Jesus when he made the statement.
