Please help -- what do I do with a bird?

a mere housewife

Not your cup of tea
A little green bird actually fell -- I think it must have fallen out of a nest somewhere -- in between our screen and the window upstairs. I had to open the window and pick it off the screen and open the screen to put it out on the roof. But it's just sitting there, panting like its heart is going to break with fright, and I think it may be too little to fly. What should I do? I don't think I'm athletic enough to crawl out on the roof and find the nest and replace it -- would that work, if I were? I can't just sit here and watch it die.

Try to climb up and return it or have Ruben, feed it with a dropper, wrap it in socks and put it under a light? How little is it?

I think it may be a little female cardinal. I don't know enough about birds to even determine if it's a baby. But it's fallen into the gutter now. Ruben is at work; and won't be home until 7:30 or so; besides he's still recovering from the surgery. I'm nervous because I have no balance: I couldn't walk across a gravel parking lot until I was five or six. Are there any kind of shoes that are better for being on a roof?

Birds die very easily of fright - they have heart attacks if they're scared enough. There was nothing you could do. Are female cardinals green?

So sorry to hear that Heidi.
We are animal lovers in our family as well.. I just sigh when I think of all the suffering all of creation goes through daily, how much it is a part of our fallen world. How nice it will be when it just won't be that way any more...

I'm not surprised that they can die of fright, considering how hard its heart was pounding. I do feel terrible; like I should have known not to leave it on the roof.

Meg, I think female cardinals can be somewhat green; but I realized that its beak is wrong. I'm not really sure what it is; and I don't think it can be that much of a fledgling even though its small. I could post some pics (I would like to find out what it is: it's very pretty) but dead bird pictures are just a little -- well, not very wonderful, really.

It's always disturbing to come up against the suffering of animals, and to witness what we've done to creation. When I was little we rescued a baby bunny from the lawnmower and when I realised it was dying in my hands I shoved it under the shed and went in the house and wept because I couldn't bear it. I'm afraid I haven't grown much in bravery :-).

Pergy, won't there be birds of paradise in heaven?

So sorry about the little bird Heidi. You did what you could, I can see why you put it on th roof. I think I would have done the same thing hoping the momma bird would come find it. Maybe you can google search and find out what type of bird it was. Oh and check your pm's. :)

I had to put my kitty to sleep last week. I always wanted to protect her - and then I had to kill her. I don't plan to get another one, it's just too hard.

(Mat 10:29) Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

Awesome passage for this Andrew. Thanks.

You're welcome, brother. May this mediation also be a blessing.

Obdiah Sedgwick, Providence Handled Practically, p. 8 (on Matt. 10.29-31):

What do you think of the sparrows, which fly up and down? No man notices them; one man hunts them, and another man kills them for his pleasure; yet not one of them may fall to the ground without your Father ordering it to occur, and permitting it to be so. It does not come by an idle chance, but by His working providence. Do you think that any evil or anything shall befall you without your Father taking notice of it, ordering it, and governing it? No, if God has an eye for the sparrows, you may be confident that He has a special care for you; not only the great moments of your life and death are ordered by Him, but even the hairs of your head are numbered. He knows them all, He attends to them all; and if to the very hairs of your head, how much more does He care for your person, safety, and preservation?
