Hey Dr. Matt,
I want to propose a Puritan Board tee shirt in the spirit of several recent threads.

"Let your esse be bene!"

You sure can Gregg, just stand absolutely still for a moment.
(Jacob, fetch your musket, we got a troublemaker in the shop.)

You'll be disappointed Collen.

Fortasse Jeff, et si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes!
(Maybe Jeff, and if you can read this you're over educated.)

I want mine to have this on it:

Perhaps, Jeff, if also you know (how) to read, you ave too much learning!

Quid rides, de te fabula narratur.

Excuse my ignornace, but what is the deal with esse and bene?

I hear people talk about these terms around here, but they are new to me. What do they mean?

The 'esse' is the "being" or sine qua non (that without which is not) and the 'bene esse' is the "well being" (not essential but crucial to the structure and maintenance of the thing).

In theological circles, I believe that it refers mainly if not exclusively to the church: that what is the essence of the church and what is helpful or useful to the church.

Very helpful, many thanks kind sir.

You're :welcome:.

"Let your essence be pure"
"Let your doctrine be orthodox"
"Let your church government be sound"
"Let your worship be regulated by God's Word"
"Let your presbyterianism be orthodox" (Shameless plug for the OPC)

These would all fit.
