Robert Conquest, the great English historian, chronicler of the horrors of Stalinist Communism in many books, died yesterday (August 3), at the age of 98. His writings helped the West to keep its resolve during the Cold War years (1946-1991). Liberals derided the statistics Conquest gave in his 1968 book The Great Terror: Stalin's Purges in the Thirties. But younger generations of scholars, including those in Russia, have demonstrated that his numbers were, if anything, on the conservative side. Current estimate of those killed under Soviet Communism is now about 25,000,000.
I have no idea regarding his spiritual state but, under God, he did yeoman work disclosing the evils of Soviet communism.
