Sproul's Romans Commentary

Anyone on PB have any opinions on Sproul's Commentary on Romans? Does it deal at all with NPP or FV? Is it worth adding to Hodge, Haldane, Murray etc?

I have it and it is good, but very brief. It is pastoral in nature and I believe it is based on his sermons, so it does not address issues such as the ones you mentioned. If you find a good deal on a used one, then it is worth having, but I wouldn't spend the money to buy it new.

I have it Bill is right in that is more pastoral. Back in November ligonier was giving it away for a donation of any amount, that's how i got it.

I also have it and found that although it seems to touch on all the verses, it seems to almost skim through Romans. It almost feels like a brief overview. There isn't much explaination for the interpretations and in places where I wanted to read reasons or arguments, it simply stated Sproul's opinion with no defense. I would not recommend it. If you find it cheap for $5 or something, perhaps. I found myself just going back to Calvin's Commentaries and only using Sproul's Romans if I wanted to know what Sproul's view was.

I picked it up on holiday this year in the outer Hebrides for 50p,and only
started reading it last week. As been noted it is brief, but has some good contemporary
applications and neat aphorisms. It would serve as a quick reference paper back,and as a
general guide for church members.Though I have reservations on ch9 to 11

Mr Sproul is good for those just coming in to the reformed tradition. But inthe same class as Mr. Murray? No way.

It is more Devotional than Theological.
It is an easy read but it is only surface deep.
It is not a bad book to have on your shelf but not on the same shelf as Hodge, Haldane, Murray etc!

Which commentary are we talking about? He's done two on Romans.

I find Sproul's commentaries to be very Pastoral. (that's not a criticism). In fact, I believe they are transcribed copies of his sermo I find them very similar to the commentaries of James Boice. If you like one, you will like the other.
