If you refer to their right shoulder, the "field flies first."
What this means is that the field of 50 stars is always set towards the front of the individual, so if it's on the soldiers right shoulder, then it is considered advancing.
Much in the same way as a flag-bearer in a war would move...the field would be flying first.
