Does anyone know of any good reading making the arguments for modern-day Jews not descending from the 12 tribes?

No, but I can tell you that there are those that claim they can trace their lineage back to the days of Christ.

For one, Arthur Koestler's book The Thirteenth Tribe.

I thought physical / genetic descendency doesn't matter anyway? When the temple was destroyed, it marked the end of the Old Covenant, and even for the diaspora, the old Jewish religion was kaput.

Burt, I keep a spare copy or two of Koestler around to give to dispensationalists just watch their heads explode when they realize that Olmert may not be a son af Abraham (in any sense).:D
