He was born on August 12,1744. ( Some sources dispute this and say August 23). He was just 4 years younger than his good friend Augustus Toplady. He preached at Toplady's funeral.
He was a noted preacher , but ,eccentric ,as authorities C.H.Spurgeon and J. C.Ryle note. Spurgeon said that Mr. Hill "may have allowed his humor too much liberty."
Mr. Hill was involved in many controversies as many were at that time. He engaged in written debates with William Huntington , for instance.
