Toastmasters Story

We homeschooled our son through high school. We encouraged him to get involved in the local chapter. They required parental accompaniment at his age, but he still ended up being very active and even had responsibilities for example with the schedule.

The thing is, if you show up, you speak. They will get you to do it. In that chapter they had a thing called Table Talk and you would have to speak for 3 minutes, spontaneously, on a topic they chose.

His mother usually took him because of my work schedule. One time I went down instead. I ended up getting the best Table Talk speech award that night.

I was glad I went. You should try it.

We did this with a homeschool group when I was 12. I remember doing a speech advocating the death penalty-- I had all these charts and graphs and well researched information about how it would cut down on the overcrowded prisons problem. I also did something with a tarantula in a jar. I always spoke too quickly though.

What I remember most is my little sister getting confused and calling it 'WaffleMakers'. It was fun. I'm not sure that I learned anything: I did very badly in college speech anyway (I got up, remembered the first and last sentences of what I supposed to say, and with great poise, sat down. I think the great poise kept me from flunking).

My dad wanted me to be involved in his chapter, but I really had nothing to say, as by that time I was beginning to be interested in church history and, well, the leaders of the group were Roman Catholic and we met in their synagogue. :-\

Probably the only thing I learned was that if you're going to say something, you'd best be prepared. That and don't run up around the tables while clapping your hands and whooping right before your speech. They didn't think that was very professional, but I saw Steve Balmer do it once, so I know they're wrong. :-)

My company has corportate memberships. I looked into joining with my previous company, but never did.

I think it is a great resource for self improvement.

So...

Live your best life now! ;)

I also think it's a great tool for self-improvement. I am considering going there sometime. I am kind of shy so it will take great motivation to follow through. Somebody pray for me please.

My fiancee's mother was in it down in Indiana and she really liked it. She went to like a state conference or something and had to speak at it. Man, would I be nervous...

Just so happens that my company sent out an email today announcing an upcoming meeting to discuss involvement in Toastmasters. Signed up.
