When was Christ's work finished?

Watched parts of a debate with James White and Joe Heschmeyer earlier and the latter, though it was unclear to me what he was trying to do accomplish other than Christ still intercedes (it's granted but Heschmeyer still seemed to fail that this tied to the mass as a continual sacrifice), was pressing that Christ's sacrifice wasn't completed at Calvary using Hebrews 7, 9 and 10, but rather it was completed (if at all in his view) at the Ascension when the sacrifice was presented. I hadn't even thought about it that way before. So was the presentation in heaven a mere formality or a part of it's completion, particularly a final phase?

John 17:4-5, finishing the work was a necessary preliminary qualification to being glorified. He could not be glorified if the work was not finished. The intercession is His appearing in the presence of God for us. By this means He presents the finished work as meritorious and pleads for its application for our full salvation. If the work was not finished there would be nothing to present.
