Where do our souls come from?

I was ask the following Sunday evening by a young man in our church: "Where do our souls come from? Does God create each individual human soul at the moment of conception or does the soul come into existence as a result of the act of procreation?"

I told him that I'd have to get back to him on that one. I'm getting ready to dig into Reymond and Dabney's Systematics. Any other suggestions of where to look for a solid answer? Any specific passages of Scripture?

Perhaps not a total answer to your question but it was an interesting verse about the origin of our soul:

Isaiah 57:16 'For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry; For the spirit would fail before Me, and the souls which I have made.
