Puritan Board Progression

Puritan Board Freshman
Hey friends,

I’ve been on PB for about a year now and I have been thankful for all of your thoughts, suggestions etc. One thing I noticed off the bat is that people have different titles I.e. Freshman, Doctor, Graduate. Maybe I just missed this but I’m trying to figure out how the system works. Is it based on how many posts and replies you have, how long you’ve been on here, or something else? Just curious thanks.

I don't believe this has changed:
Puritan Board Freshman 0

Puritan Board Sophomore 500 posts

Puritan Board Junior 1000 posts

Puritan Board Senior 2000 posts

Puritan Board Graduate 3000 posts

Puritan Board Post-Graduate 4000 posts

Puritan Board Professor 5000 posts

Puritan Board Doctor 6000 posts

Looks like I’m gonna be a Freshman for a long time.

You just need to be here long enough; and it helps to be an admin but that's not everybody's excuse. the only reason the top three are the top three is that number four left a long time ago. Besides; you want to go for quality not quantity. :)

Well, if you'd participate in the college football pick'em challenge, your count would go up faster. How do you think I got to #12 on the list.
Funny, but good advice. I’m not complaining by the way. I’m more making a statement. I just don’t see myself posting that much. I find puritanical board to be an amazing resource for me personally and really fun. I don’t have any social media and this (and YouTube) is my exception. I have learned a lot and have had some amazing connections through this. So thanks!

On the topic of board stats (because this seems almost too silly to merit its own thread), how are "reaction scores" calculated? It seems to be some sort of combination of "positive reactions" plus some fraction I can't determine for "neutral/negative" reactions.

For example, Jacob has 13,483 positive reactions plus 348 neutral ones for a reaction score of 13,501 - so, 18 points for 348 neutral reactions? Chris, on the other hand, has 12,637 positive reactions plus 1,451 neutral ones, for a reaction score of 12,676 - so 39 points for 1,451 neutrals? I could go on, but the gist is that I can't make the math math.

"reaction scores"

I seem to recall when PB underwent a major platform update, maybe 10 to 12 years ago, all reactions on all posts were inadvertently deleted. That's why when you look at older threads there are typically no reactions (excepting maybe a few that were belatedly added after the update). This also means veteran posters' overall reaction rates and numbers are skewed relative to newer members'.

AI says this is the answer to your question (N.B. AI can be wrong but it makes sense so let's go with it):
Knowing that this is the Puritan Board adds the final, definitive piece of the puzzle. That 25-year platform history completely explains why the math doesn't add up.

Because the Puritan Board has migrated across different forum software generations (starting long before modern XenForo even existed), Jacob and Chris’s profiles are dealing with a massive accumulation of legacy data artifacts. [1]
The math breaks down due to three historical quirks specific to a 25-year-old forum: [1]

1. The Legacy "Thanks" System
Before XenForo introduced the multi-emoji "Reactions" system in version 2.1, older versions of the software used a basic "Like" system. Going back even further (to the early 2000s vBulletin or phpBB eras), forums like the Puritan Board relied on custom third-party add-ons like "Post Thanks / Like".
  • When the board migrated to modern XenForo, the database converted those decades of old "Thanks" and "Likes" into the new system.
  • Depending on how the administrators mapped the old database during the upgrade, legacy "Thanks" were frequently imported directly into the user's total Reaction Score, even if they didn't perfectly match the new individual "Positive" emoji count.

2. Orphaned Scores from Merged or Deleted Users
Over 25 years, thousands of accounts on a major theological hub get deleted, banned, merged, or anonymized. [1]
  • When a user is deleted from a forum, their physical posts might vanish, but the system doesn't always cleanly scrub every single database row tied to reactions they gave to other people.
  • Jacob and Chris are likely retaining "phantom" points from users or threads that no longer exist in the active post counts, widening the gap between their visible counts and their calculated scores.

3. Decades of Desynced Database Caches
Every time a forum upgrades its major software architecture, the database structure changes. When a site handles millions of posts over a quarter of a century, background counters inevitably drift. [1, 2]
  • Unless the administrators run a heavy, server-stressing database tool called "Rebuild Caches" after every single update, the summary text on a profile card (e.g., "13,483 positive" or "348 neutral") will stop corresponding directly to the actual background integer score table.

What this means for the user's question
The person trying to solve the math was treating the Puritan Board like a fresh system where every click happened yesterday. In reality, Jacob and Chris's scores are archaeological layers of a 25-year forum history. The "missing points" aren't coming from the 348 neutral reactions—they are ghosts of 20 years of old "Likes" and "Thanks" that survived multiple system migrations! [1]

So reaction scores have been around since the beginning of the board's existence? I didn't even think Facebook had reaction scores back then.

see my prior post just posted. we were on vbulletin and then 2 xenforo upgrades added to the mix jumbled things up.

Not sure about that, but they've been around at least as far back as when I first joined in 2010. There weren't as many or necessarily the same selections, though. For example, I'm pretty sure the heart was added only a few years ago.

Speaking of titles, how'd you get "demoted" to Graduate? Weren't you a specialized title like "baptist" in Greek or something?

That was a foisted moniker by and for the entertainment of a certain PB official, who shall remain nameless... I recently petitioned to have my ID normalized again, and it was graciously granted…

Yeah ... I think you were the one who started it right? Didn't you start a thread on titles and practically dare them to do something to your title? Or am I misremembering?

You have a good memory, my friend. It was a sad if remarkable case of good intentions quickly gone awry...

I don't know if it is still the case, but back when I joined, a reaction counted as a post.

Reactions don't count as posts, and DMs don't count as posts - but reactions to DMs do count towards your reaction score, it seems.
