What kind of car are you driving Nathan? Just stay away from performance tires if you have a family sedan or you will be paying too much. Tires are mileage rated and the longer the mileage rating the more costly they are. A good alignment is very necessary also. I usually just get Goodyear Eagles. But the brand really shouldn't matter as tire technology has boomed in the past 30 years.

ride quality:
Michelin at a local chain.
Rotate AND balance every 10,000 miles, check alignment every 10,000 miles and get alignment if out of alignment. Both sets will last about 80,000 miles if you do this.
Both provide good value for money, because of the 80,000 miles.
The first option will be 25 to 50percent less expensive, and give a good ride, good road grip in snow, the latter, more expensive, will have a very good ride, very good grip in snow.

Goodrich merged with Uniroyal (who made some very bad radials) but the tire business is now owned by Michelin, who has an outstanding history with radials.
I've had very bad luck with the longevity of Goodyears, good luck with the performance of Pirellis. I ran one set of Contis, but they must not have been remarkable in either direction.

Ditto on the Goodyear advice: older Goodyear= good for a year. We always go with the Kijiji/Craigslist special. Here in Canada, there is tax, envirofees, etc. and people often take their tires off well before they're garbage. I just bought a set of 4 all seasons on rims for my very smokin' hot '99 Toyota Tercel and they were $20 each on rims with well over 50% tread remaining. Motomasters (Canadian Tire) brand, but I can change them every two years as a set for the price of one single tire of a premium brand.
