Hi friends,

What would you recommend as the best works available for the history of the English Baptists? There are two specific periods of which I'm especially interested: the time of the London Confession, and the rise of the modern missionary movement of the late 1700s.

I heartily recommend History of the English Calvinistic Baptists 1771-1892 by Robert W. Oliver

Somewhat prior to the actual date of the London Confession, this looks interesting nonetheless:

Glimpses of Glory: John Bunyan and English Dissent By Richard L. Greaves. A preview of the book is available on Google Books.

Also, to dig deeper, The Story of Harecourt, by John Marsh concerns the Rev. George Cokayn, a close associate of Bunyan's who saw his final work to the printer and who wrote a most stirring preface to that work (The Acceptable Sacrifice).

Unfortunately my time is short right now, but I may come back and give the links if I have time later. There are pertinent books by James Renihan, Tom Nettles, Samuel Waldron (on the confession) as well as a legion of older works, many of which are available on Google Books. I have several of them saved. You can PM me if you'd like me to post the links when I have a chance. I know there are some recent works by some Southern Baptist historians on the modern missionary movement. Michael A.G. Haykin has written in this area as well. Google the Andrew Fuller Center.
