Well, my mom is dead. But I honored her today by ensuring that my family made it to church on time.

And my wife, the mother of my children, we honored her yesterday - we let her sleep in, we cleaned the house while she got to sit and read a book, the kids gave her a box of chocolate covered strawberries and a brand new Garmin nuvi 765T, which she'd been asking for virtually non-stop ever since she didn't get it for her birthday gift... and I handled dinner.

Wow, what a perfect day for her, and with such a great gift as well! I know she felt the luxury of the day! I loved the 'got to read a book' part!

Now that is an awesome gift! I would have loved it! I am sure your wife appreciated it!

Ben, yeah, that Nuvi is a lot more practical than a pasta maker attachment, isn't it? btw your smiling family was a blessing this morning. Your daughter made a special point of telling me that mom said it was okay to pass me the communion tray as it was passed down the row. She was absolutely adorable. You're a blessed man, brother.

I call my mom, Jean calls her mom. The "kids" gave Jean a bottle of 12-year-old single malt Scotch whiskey (which she will probably have for the next few years ... when we married, she had part of a fifth, and it lasted over a year). Honor your mother and father that your days may be long upon the earth is sufficient reason to give honor to the one whom God has explicitly commanded we give honor, that I feel it is honoring and worshipping him to honor our mother (or father) on the Christian Sabbath.

Our sermon at church this morning was on Luke 19: 41-48; there are worse things for producers to profit from than children's love for their mothers (the sermon wasn't connected at all to Mother's Day, though Mother's Day and honouring our mothers were mentioned during the service.)

No doubt, when it is called for; but I don't think the advertisers should be given undisputed liberty to dictate. When we buy the line that love, honor, etc., can only be expressed with cash, preferably lots of it, preferably given in response to advertising, it seems very much like a capitulation to the claimed lordship of Mammon. It is interesting, of course, because it means that a lot of our culture is actually quite artificial - created or adapted by clever marketers to make us express fundamental impulses in commercial ways.

When we had mothering Sunday back in March, we kept it in the time-honoured British way. My sons and daughter, organised by the oldest one, clubbed together on a very cute card, and all remembered to phone me up.
That warmed my heart!!
I've seen me in other years (especially when the boys were students) emailing them on the afternoon of the day to say, "guys, if you hurry it's not too late to wish me a Happy Mothers' Day, and by the way, be sure and tell all your friends to do likewise!!"
It never bothered me - it's just our way, and I know they love me anyway...

...and a brand new Garmin nuvi 765T, which she'd been asking for virtually non-stop...
just out of interest, what's a one of those?
