Confessing Original Sin

My account does not have enough posts to participate in the Wading Pool but I came arcoss a question by @Eyermatt5683 asking if anyone knew of a Puritan book that mentioned confessing Original Sin. Our men’s group read Watson’s A Body of Divinity this summer where he does just that.

“Original sin is not only a privation, but a positive inherent evil. It is a depraved habit, a leprosy diffused in the soul. It is not only a defect, but a pollution. We are not only empty of good, but full of evil. It is a vicious quality which infects all the parts of man. We confess our actual sins, but we must also confess our original sin. It cleaves to us, and is our greatest burden.” (A Body of Divinity, Banner of Truth edition, p. 114–115)

"Original sin" is – in us the redeemed – but the remaining corruption in our natures. And, as those justified by the decree of God for our faith in His Son's saving power and love, this being a new creature – a holy creature – with the indwelling Holy Spirit commencing His sanctifying work in us . . . I think to focus on this mercy and love of our Saviour, a necessary part of our overcoming this "original sin" / remaining corruption, lest we fall into the slough of despond.
