Puritan Board Professor
SoldieroftheRock's thread about high school graduation, college, etc., got me thinking of some fun times I used to have back in my college days.

For those who went to college, what would you say would be the most fun things that you remember about college?

Some of mine are the the buck-buck competition, swimming in the New River rapids, and playing volleyball with fellow believers. It was also fun trying caving and repelling, and just goofing off with dorm friends.

What are your "funnest" memories of college?

Oh yeah, I almost had another fun experience at school - sky diving. I made the mistake of calling home before I tried it, and my mother's crying changed my plans.

Bob, NEVER tell your mom before you do anything dangerous - what were you thinking? I remember getting a ride home from Kalamazoo with a guy I was in IVCF with - I called my mom when we got home. She asked (real casually) when we left - AND I TOLD HER! Well, we were cruising ... probably 85 the whole way home. But from that point forward, she referred to that guy as "The Wild Man." Sigh.

I spent a summer at Cedar Campus, up in da UP. That was lots of fun. We went sailing on Lake Huron. As a matter of fact, that summer rounded out my Great Lakes experience. I can now proudly say that I have been swimming in all 5 Great Lakes. And Superior was a challenge. Freezing cold even in August. But I digress.

I had lots of great times with IVCF in college - canoeing on the Pere Marquette River, etc. It was a fun time. College can a positive, edifying experience, or not. I wish I could say that I always chose the positive and edifying. I didn't.

Well, I am only two years into it, but I spent this past one as an RA on campus, so I have a few.

Catching 8 of my residents (and a bottle of jack daniels) after they went joyriding in one of the school golf carts.

The untold number of excuses I recieved regarding how various residents came into posession of alcohol/drugs. Of course, it was never THIERS. They found it lying on the ground... or they were holding it for a friend.

Finding two 24-packs of beer in the parking lot (unopened), taking it to turn in to the housing director, then having two residents come to my door to ask for their beer back. If they had just let it go, I never would have known whose it was. Instead they ended up with a $50 fine each.

I guess I attribute that to "brain freeze" or a glitch in my thinking process. I was so excited, I just had to tell someone. Of all people to choose!

BTW, my sister went skydiving for the first time to celebrate her 50th birthday. Big sister was smarter than little brother. To this day, I don't know if my mom knows.

Sounds like you had a lot of fun in college. The closest I ever came to the Great Lakes was when I flew over them on a business trip years ago. Its amazing how big they are.

I think many/most can relate to that.

Leon,
Great to have you back. How ya been?

Being an RA sounds like it can be a very unique experience.

Our universities are filled with extremely intelligent people. These two may very well fall into that category, but...

One of the more amusing aspects to that particular one (which I forgot to mention) was that it occured on haloween night. I had just gotten back from an on-campus event I helped organize, and was still in full costume... as a ringwraith. I answered the door with a broadsword in hand, and they STILL had the guts to demand their beer back.

OK, this didn't happen to me, it happened to a girlfriend of mine. She found a plant someone had left outside her door. She thought it was pretty, so she brought it into her apartment. Ahem. Three guesses what kind of a plant it was. And of course she didn't know. Neither did I. Somebody (I can't remember who) eventually told her what it was...

Mary (Still laughing over that one!)

Bob, it's always best to keep Moms out of the loop. Any loop. Especially when she's going to cry...and skydiving is a likely candidate. Sounds like your sister's the smart one in the family! Or did she just learn from your mistakes?

Skydiving looks like fun, and if Annette can do it, so can I! (Was that Beach Blanket Bingo?) I'm not scared of heights or anything. Of course, that's pretty high. Haha. Anyone seen "High Anxiety" Mel Brook's tribute to Hitchcock? "Top floor, top of the hotel, you can't get any higher, we're pretty high." And poor Mel has a fear of heights...very funny movie!

The Great Lakes are AWESOME. Literally. I'd have to say Lake Michigan is the best one, especially with the dunes, but they each have their amazing factors. Superior is so far north, and soooo deep, it never warms up. Plus there's rocks on the bottom, not sand. It takes a Viking spirit to get into Superior.

Ooooh, I also did the "Shake & Bake" at Cedar Campus! It's an old Finnish tradition (there are alot of Finns in da UP) - you do a sauna, then you jump in the lake. Some people cut a hole in the ice and do it in the middle of winter. I wasn't there in the winter, so it never came up (thank goodness - I'm the sort of person who'd do it rather than be called a chicken)...good memories. I also saw the Northern Lights that summer for the first time. Amazing. Spectacular.

That was a great summer.
