Ive been in a heat of discussions about Gods Love with my grandmother who is enrapped with the conversations with god heresies.

I want to write out a paer for her showing the attributes of Jesus and how closely connected it is with Gods attributes in the OT.

She doesnt like the OT anymore because it makes God out as a punisher of evil. Any help would be most useful.

That may work, but perhaps a softer more indirect approach is to show her all the "merciful" passages in the OT. That way her myth of the OT can be dispelled and you may then proceed to show the consistency between OT Yaweh and Christ, though I would start the comparison with the merciful attributes first, then move on to the wrath and judgment. The key is to get her reading and thinking on her own.

Yes I agrre in fact thats what I want to do Im just frustrated that it seems that she is making God out to be a teddy bear:mad:

FYI - I find that Sproul's book "The Love of God" is very good for at explaining God's love and mercy, vs. the need for justice and punishment. You might want to read it and see if there's anything in there that might be helpful in explaining these things to your GM.

No need to write a big paper. Ask her if God is God. Wether OT or NT, He still is the same God. If she does not agree, then you have much work ahead of you.

Now if she agrees, then remind her that God still is a punisher of evil. He has not changed at all when it comes to that. Then remind her of the Love He has for His elect, and the hatred of their sins, by the death and resurredction of Christ.

That displays his Holy Hatred of evil and His unbounding Love at the same time.

CJ,
Thank you I will look inot this book by sproul.

Wild Boar,
See she is struggling with the fact of whether or not the God of OT was distorted by man for whatever purpose and that Jesus she says is God which is a good sign but she is not wrong is saying God is Love and abounding in Mercy its just that these COG books and her penecostal church have a wrong way of emphasing Gods love. See I just want her to have clear understanding of Who Jesus really is in the context of the OT. See I want to be a writer anyway so its no bog deal for me to start hammering this out. maybe start by writing essays then compilee it into a book.

Nathan,

Do this. Do a small study on God in the OT and God in the NT. You will find things that will surprise your grandmother. For example, Jesus refers to hell and judgment more than God does in the OT. There are more commands to do (imperatives) in the NT than in the OT. There are abounding references to God as loving a merciful in the OT (start with the wonderful words in the 10 commandments - judging the children, but showing mercy to 1000s of generations). Then ask her if she would be interested in doing a study on the character of God. Sit with her over a few sessions and look at these passages together.
