It's amazing what cancer can do to people.

A year and a half ago I was playing worship music in church, not really bothering too much to know people outside my age group. Around that time a man, an elder in fact, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. It was sad, because the guy always seemed really happy to talk to any of his brothers and sisters in Christ. I thought he was a cool guy, and it was unfortunate that he acquired with this horrible thing.

And it's pretty humbling to think that even as this man began to face this massive, life-ending beast he found time to ask my mom about how I was doing at college.

A man with cancer, who had every right to be concerned with his family's future, decided to ask my mom how I was doing at college.

And I wasn't even praying for a great man (as far as men go) with cancer. He found time to check on me, I didn't even think of him when I prayed (which wasn't too often anyway).

I saw him today in church. He is beaten up. He's gained a lot of weight from steroids. Like, 50 pounds or something.

Dealing with this stupid death thing is only going to get worse. Of course, it lacks its sting, and that is encouraging. Praise to Christ, through whom death died!

It's things like cancer, disease, and death that make me hate my sin. These are some of the ultimate and visible consequences of our sin. Sure, Adam brought it into the world, but we wouldn't have done anything differently if we were there. It makes me angry, not at God, but at my own sin, that Sin ravages God's creation as it does.

Since I've thought more about this cancer-stricken man and how he just asked my mom that one question, I've tried to pray more. I don't think God's providence will ever stop blowing my mind. Even after a life of service to the church as an elder, God uses even his coming death to teach little Daniel Pope a bit more about the importance of prayer.

Man, we serve such a cool God, to put it modern terms. Cool and awesome and amazing and gracious who never ceases to freeze my brain (imagine the sound of Big Ben's gears grinding to a loud, reverberating halt) when I think on his infiniteness.

I called this the everything topic because I don't think it fits in a lot of the forums. Perhaps we can use this thread as kind of a praising, God-rocks-my-face-off discussion.
