Why motorcycles and church do not mix

I can't quite figure out what is supposed to be happening in this video.

Is the motorcycle supposed to be there? Why is someone riding around on a motorcycle in church (that is, I'm assuming from the title that's a church service)?
 
yeah it is a church service, it is some gimmick for a youth group.

A pastor in the Woodlands is somewhat famous for having his giant stage set up where guys could perform motorcycle jumps as an illustration to his sermon.

It is all gimicks.
 
From what I gather, there's a youth group thing going on and the guy announces some idiot on a motorcycle who rides in. They guy pops a wheelie and loses control of the bike, which careens into a table.

Thankfully, nobody was killed.

We were talking about this last night after Thanksgiving with friends. I was at an Evening Service the other night where a person gave a presentation and then made lame application of the Scripture.

The Associate Pastor was livid afterward (as was I). He remarked: "All these teenagers complain that Church is 'boring' and they want something more exciting than the Word then this guy gets up there and gives them what they want. What they need is the Word preached."

I agree.

I believe the Word is the greatest News ever and we shouldn't be pandering to the flesh's desire for entertainment. The Word is exciting all by itself when properly exposited. I've never found any kind of entertainment that gives me the overawed Doxology that I get from the Word.
 
Wow, their RPW (the Rockin' Principle of Worship) makes ours look positively boring. I should convert.

...Then again, maybe I'll just stick with the word and sacraments. They seem less dangerous.

I agree completely. If these "ministers" (I use the term loosely) would spend the same time in study as they do planning their next event, I do not doubt that revival would break out.
 
I know a chaplain who told me he spends on average 2 hours researching and crafting his sermon and 6 hours putting together the "perfect" PowerPoint presentation to accompany it.

I'm guessing he is not unlike some of these pastors...
 
I had a chaplain tell me once that he could spend an hour a day preparing a sermon if he wanted, but that there was no need to spend that kind of time.


The worst I have heard is Andy Stanley talking about spending 40-50 hrs a week at the office, but at the end of the book mentions how he spends 45min to an hour on Saturday evening preparing his sermon. So I ask, "what in the world are you doing for the 40-50 hrs during the week?"
 
Hmmm...something about this whole event strikes me as somewhat - oh, how do you say - obnoxious, foolish, and/or downright offensive. Apparently, Christ just needs a bit of spicing up.

Or perhaps the opposite is true.

The Word is dangerous:

Jeremiah 23:29 "'Is not My word like a fire?' says the LORD, 'And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?'"

Ephesians 5:19 "the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God"

And so are the sacraments:

Romans 6:4 "Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

1 Peter 3:20-21 "who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. There is also an antitype which now saves us -- baptism..."

Luke 22:20-21 "Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table.'"

1 Corinthians 11:29-30 "For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep."

Is it not easier to take up these stunts, far less dangerous than to be confronted with the living God in His living and powerful Word? This is a sign that many in the church are not ready to meet with God but what will happen then when He meets with them? (Amos 4:12-13)
 
This is reminiscent of the youth group I was apart of at an American Baptist church before I moved about seven months ago. Sure, we didn't have motorcycles, but there was a despicably small use of Scripture and an obnoxious amount of "fun" to "draw in unbelieving kids." I was sick of it because I wanted the Word taught. To have some actual fellowship and some time in the Word, a couple of friends and I decided to have after-school Bible studies in addition to youth group. Then, when I brought up a desire for more Scripture to the youth pastor, he decided to use it as an opportunity to "correct me for breaking the unity of the youth group." That didn't go over well. Soon after, he started telling kids in the youth group that I was gossiping about him and that the Bible study was to "take kids from the youth group"--both of which were false. The church leadership didn't even talk to the youth pastor when I told them about everything that was going on, so I decided to break ties with the youth group; it was a complete waste of God's financial provision for ministry. It amazes me to no end that some people in ministry think that they can "entertain" people into the Kingdom. To make matters worse, they call it fellowship...
