World Cup (soccer) thread

The flopping is area specific (Latin countries) and not game-wide. Flopping is far worse in the NBA than in soccer in general.

Offside is for the whole offensive half and the intent is to stop soccer from just being a "boom the ball down the field and pray" or "hail mary" game.

1. Stoppage time is always indicated as the click reaches the 90th minute and usually compensates for injuries that caused the game to stop.
2. This is a relatively recent development and the South Americans, Spanish, Portugese and the Italians are the worst. I am quite thankful that in general terms British are not as guilty as the foreign players playing for Britosh clubs. I don't know if you are familiar with rugby but football is played by people pretending they are hurt whilst rugby is played by people pretending they are not hurt.
3. Offside is actually quite simple. If your team is defending then it's offside by a mile. If your team is attacking then it's never offside.
 
I thought Australia did well yesterday.

Stoppage time is the amount of time needed for Manchester United or Celtic to score enough goals not to lose.

Lol. I remember years back when the Red Devils would be down like two goals and still make it back to win in extra time. It was aggravating to say the least.

Bit of exageration. Either way, there's a reason soccer is the world sport, and arguably the best one. It has both the tactical and artistic element to it that's hard to find in other sports.

I'm not a big fan of Latin American football. In general, with the exception of Brazil and Argentina, it can be very boring. No consistent ball possession. The ball is in the air far too often. There are a lot of cheap plays. I could go on. I prefer the European way.
 
Costa Rica were outstanding in the second half; the third goal, in particular, was brilliantly taken. One of my earliest World Cup memories is arriving home from school in 1990 to watch Costa Rica beat Scotland - which was a real shock. :eek:
 
While there were games on TV in 1986, 1990 was the first time a lot (if not all) the games were shown on American television. Will always remember Roger Milla and the Irish triumph from 1990.

I remember that all too painfully, sitting with my tartan scarf watching in disbelief. After Peru and Iran in 1978 I did not think it could get worse. It did.
 
I'm a supporter of Liverpool and watch the Premier League, so I'm going with England. The Italians can be exciting to watch though!
 
I'm rooting for England, my 8 year old is rooting for Italy, and we're watching in Spanish because Univision is the only free live streaming we could find in the U.S.

Espn3.com is streaming online and should have all their games on TV. I've been watching them all on my laptop.

I would not say so. Ok he did not have the best of nights but it's not just about scoring goals. His work rate of the ball is tireless and his lay offs are invaluable. It was Rooney who set up England's equaliser.

I would not be too concerned as I still think England will qualify from their group.
