The Hobbit

We saw it today. I've never read the books, so I feel like I'm not getting the storyline sometimes. My kids really enjoyed it. My oldest said she didn't think it lived up to all the "hype". I thought it was a good movie. I probably wouldn't have gone if my friend hadn't invited us. I'm not a movie goer.

We were going to go see it but after much debate and no room in the budget we are waiting for it to come out on DVD. Instead, we bought the book. We started three days ago and we're halfway through. The book is really good and we love LOTR so we can't wait! (Perhaps someone in the extended family will purchase tickets for me & my daughter to see it sooner... Who knows?)

I'll wait it to come on Amazon HD or Blue-Ray. Can't stand the crowds nor do I find it cost-effective.

We took our son to see it, and other than having to adjust to the 48 fps, we thoroughly enjoyed it !! I had read many reviews, and have to admit I was a little apprehensive. Once I heard "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit", I just smiled a little and relaxed !! Now begins the long wait for the next part.

My wife and I saw it, and enjoyed it, with caveats.

My parents taught me to read with The Hobbit before I started school. I wrote many a paper in high school on symbolism in LOTR. I have read The Hobbit, LOTR, and The Silmarillion a dozen times. Thus, it bugged me that they changed the story, and added characters (Radagast, Azog) where they "were not found" in the story, made Bilbo a mini-action hero at one point, and put Thorin on steriods. Who ever said this is "The Hobbit + Appendices + bits of the Sillmarillion" was correct. That said, the movie was breathtaking to watch, but could have had 45 minutes trimmed. The big fight/flight from goblin town was a little "keystone cops meets WWF" with knocking down Orcs with the multi-dwarf driven ladder. I thought the actor playing Bilbo got it just right, and the "true to Tolkien" riddle game segment was first rate. Quibbles aside, I would reccomend it to all but the most "TR tolkien fans." :)
