Jethro Tull, The Who, and The Beatles, yes...but Chicago? Really? Bleh. They had a song or two, but mostly it all sounds the same.

I do not dare listen to non christian anymore, just because of knowing what it does to my sub-consions.
But then again, this would just make me the weaker-brother so do not mind me.

I see where you're coming from. And I don't think that anyone here is saying that any of this music gives them more pleasure than the Word, or thoughts of Heaven, etc.
For me, I totally love listening to music, but it's all garbage ultimately. It doesn't draw me away from my devotion to God. It's like some foods, it pleases me temporarily.

So, there are Christians who enjoy different types of rock music. I feel, though, that each Christian should be discerning and not listen to music that would cause them to sin.

So, whether it's rock, rap, or classical, it's tripe in the long run... and each of us has our own tastes.

And get this, I hear there are Christians that actually like listening to Country!

Here are a few others that I am particularly fond of:

Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever
King's X - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska
King's X - Please Come Home Mr. Bulbous
King Crimson - Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair (best three album run ever?)
Marillion - Brave
Marillion - Marbles
Crowded House - Temple of Low Men
Crowded House - Together Alone
Mike Keneally and Beer for Dolphins - Dancing
Counting Crows - August and Everything After
Toad the Wet Sprocket - In Light Syrup

Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience

Alex:

Is DA considered rock?
ELO?
I may infringe on the so-called rock genre, myself, then.
Greatest Albums of All Time (Professed Christians):
Daniel Amos - Alarma Chronicles (ok, so it's 4 albums)
Daniel Amos - Darn Floor, Big Bite
Daniel Amos - Mr. Buechner's Dream

Quickflight - Decent Beat
Nutshell - Flyaway
77s - Ping Pong Over the Abyss
John Michael Talbot - Light Eternal
Randy Stonehill - Equator
Neal Morse - It's Not Too Late
Carolyn Arends - Under the Gaze
Erick Nelson & Michelle Pillar - The Misfit
Lost Dogs - Real Men Cry
Swirling Eddies - the midget, the speck & the molecule
Servant - Rockin' Revival
Terry Scott Taylor - A Briefing for the Ascent

Some Favourite Albums which may be considered 'rock':

Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery and Imagination
ELO - No Answer (or, Electric Light Orchestra)
Jewel - Goodbye Alice in Wonderland
Boney M - Night Flight to Venus
ELO - Eldorado
ELO - Secret Messages
ELO - Time
ELP - Pictures at an Exhibition
Feist - Let it Die
Idle Race - The Birthday Party
The Move - Looking On
The Move - Message From the Country
Rick Wakeman - 1984
Sweet - Level Headed

Though, at one time, I prided myself in knowing the Beatles ouvre, I shy away from them because of their stupendously negative impact on Western Culture.

I enjoy both the apparent deconstructing of Classical music in the likes of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and others as well as the more positive blends achieved by the likes of ELO, Rick Wakeman, and others. I also have a seemingly irrational penchant for psychedelia - Tommy James, The Move, Witchqueen, etc.

As far as Country, I have grown to despise it. However, I truly appreciate Carolyn Dawn Johnson (Alberta native), and probably like Shania for her more 'pop'ular music.

And get this, I hear there are Christians that actually like listening to Country!

You bet there are!! And its Country and WESTERN!

The Derailers, Asleep At The Wheel, Pat Green, Junior Brown, Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Willie, Tammy, Gary P., Ray Wylie Hubbard, Cross Canadian Ragweed (just to name a few!). All good stuff :sing:

How about
Hocus Pocus by Focus
Paranoid by Black Sabbath
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis
Greetings from Asbury Park by Bruce Springsteen

Alex:

Is DA considered rock?
ELO?

Funny. As a kid I got to listen to Daniel Amos a lot... Only because my parents had the cassette and played it all the time. But I remember liking the song "Shotgun Angel".

So it may be rock... I can't remember 30 years ago that well. Actually, I always thought he sorta fell into the Country Western genre.

ELO is rock, even though they had their disco moments. :)

Nice!

Does Miles of Aisles by Joni Mitchell count?

All this talk about holiness
It must be the start of the latest style
Is it all books and words
Or do you really feel it?
Do you really laugh?
Do you really care?
Do you really smile when you smile?

2005

Ugh. Okay. Here's 2005. I thought this would be quicker to do. (And to think I was hoping to go all the way back into the 60's!!!)

-- I also hope that some people are discovering new bands in the genre of rock that they like.

2005
(1) 30 Seconds To Mars - A Beautiful Lie (Alternative Rock)
- Jared Leto's band. Some songs had to grow on me, and others I liked instantly. Album-wise, this takes 1st place, for me.
(2) Communic - Conspiracy In Mind (Power Metal)
- Very much like Nevermore to me. But with new life.
(3) Morgana Lefay - Grand Materia (Power Metal)
- Good to see ML back together. And an incredible album too.
(4) Primal Fear - Seven Seals (Power Metal)
- PF was always predictable, but some songs on this album are great!
(5) Dishwalla - (Self-Titled) (Rock)
- Dishwalla has a perfect sound for me. And JR's voice is perfection.
(6) HIM - Dark Light (Gothic Rock)
- The radio-friendly stuff by this band is well worth listening to.
(7) Place Vendome - (Self-Titled) (AOR / Melodic Rock)
- Only one song on this album worth listening to. "Cross The Line"! Fans of Michael Kiske will rejoice! Those who are not may cringe. Song of the year for me!
(8) Kamelot - The Black Halo (Melodic Power Metal)
- Roy Khan's vox are always amazing. I probably should give this higher marks, but I need to listen to it more first.
(9) Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (Prog Rock)
- An incredible album by PT!
(10) Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists (Heavy Rock / Nu-Metal)
- Of course, all their songs sound the same. Fans will be happy.
(11) Lifehouse - (Self-Titled) (Alternative Rock)
- Been a fan for a while. They're very radio friendly, but I enjoy a change of pace every once in a while.
(12) Death Cab For Cutie - Plans (Indie Rock)
- The vox take a while to get used to. Seen them in concert and had a great time. :)
(13) Coheed And Cambria - Good Apollo I'm Burning Star: IV (Prog / Aternative rock)
- Odd vocals, but fun to listen to.
(14) Demons & Wizards - Touched By The Crimson King (Power Metal)
- Blind Guardian & Iced Earth get together again for a 2nd album. Good. But not as good as the first.
(15) Redemption - The Fullness Of Time (Prog Metal)
- Great prog with Ray ALder on vox.
(16) Dredg - Catch Without Arms (Prog / Aternative rock)
- I liked this album a lot when I got it back in '05.
(17) Labÿrinth - Freeman (Melodic Power Metal)
- Awesome vox. Great tunes.
(18) Dead Soul Tribe - The Dead Word (Prog Metal)
- 4th album in 4 years!!! This band shold make Psychotic Waltz fans happy.
(19) Depeche Mode - Playing The Angel (New Wave / Alternative)
- A wonderful comeback for DM.
(20) Savage Circus - Dreamland Manor (Power Metal)
- A Blind Guardian copy band. But they sound good.
(21) Shinedown - Us and Them (Heavy Rock)
- Another good album.
(22) SoulRelic - Love Is A Lie We Both Believed (Gothic Metal)
- Finland gives us yet another great goth band. Too bad the broke up right after this album.
(23) The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute (Progressive Rock / Bizarre Music)
- I only like one song off this album - The Widow
(24) Trapt - Someone In Control (Alternative Rock)
- Very enjoyable album. Tinges of emo in the vox, but I still was able to like it.
(25) The Killers - Hot Fuss (Alternative / Indie Rock)
- Quite popular band. I actually like some songs.
(26) Augustana - All The Stars And Boulevards (Soft alternative)
- This band sorta reminded me of Remy Zero. Enjoyable listen.
(27) King's X - Ogre Tones (Progressive heavy rock)
- King's X surely isn't what they used to be. Some good songs, though.
(28) Dark New Day - Twelve Year Silence (Heavy Alternative)
A supergroup, kinda, that put out a pretty good album. Nothing spectacular, but good...

And some songs to point out, for your listening pleasure:

Song of the year, for me is "Cross The Line" by Place Vendome. Kiske is one of my favorite vocalists, and supposedly when he became a Christian he didn't want to sing heavy music any more. But, thankfully, he agreed to do this song! (Yes, it's total cheese) 10/10

This next video has a little movie with it, but wait for the song. It's my favorite from the album.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxNAVq2qYmU&feature=related]YouTube - from yesterday - 30 seconds to mars[/ame]

Here's a mellow tune for you. Great song.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD34DUzcOXk]YouTube - Lazarus - Porcupine Tree[/ame]

Lastly, here's one of my favorite metal bands. Not promising you'll like this, though...

Does anyone feel there is music which is off limits? If so, what and why?

I would say yes. First, any music that causes you to sin should be off limits. Whether listening to Bach or Motley Crue...

Also, I think any blasphemous music should not be listened to. And this might mean having to go to the lyrics to find out...

Oh, btw, welcome back Sarah. :)

Lots of good choices already listed.

Led Zeppelin
Guns N Roses
Bon Jovi
Metallica

These would appear on my list.

I am amazed that I actually read Matchbox 20 on here. To each their own I guess.

Ever heard this one?

I can't approve of all the songs on the album, but rock music reset in a superior genre (bluegrass) is nice.

August Burns Red

YouTube - August Burns Red - Back Burner (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)

....and As I Lay Dying

YouTube - As I Lay Dying - Forever

They are Christian Metalcore bands....if you can understand any of their lyrics..

I must be careful to put this as politely as possible, but if our church youth group promoted Forever, I would be very, very, very, very angry. Call it Metalcore...whatever. I can't be convinced that this is "Christian" and God-honoring. With a Kapital K, it is K-rap!:2cents:
